Passing Through

Handbound book / print series

Memories of Water.

In the Spring and Summer of 2021 I photographed the corroded wood and metal sea defences to the south of Happisburgh, documenting the evocative curves and apertures that have evolved over time through the constant action of the tide and by relentless exposure to salt, sun and sand. I then developed a number of the photographs as cyanotypes, a process that seemed to echo the elemental tensions - the screening and exposure, the ebb and flow - that have shaped the sea defences themselves. Some of the images are standalone shots and others feature two or three overlaid photos to give a sense of how the adjacent structures and their surface patterns interact in situ. A selection of the resulting cyanotypes have been scanned and reproduced in this book.
